Trafalgar High School 110-Year Anniversary
28 September 2022
The excitement in the air was undeniable as teachers and students streamed into Trafalgar High School on Wednesday, 28 September 2022. The occasion that saw principals, teachers, and students from ten other schools visit Trafalgar High School was a special visual display of the oldest state high school for people in the country. The school hall was beautifully decorated with photographs and memorabilia of Trafalgar’s proud 110-year history. This included ledgers that had been used to record student details in the past, equipment from when the school offered practical subjects such as woodwork, domestic science, and needlework – some of these old sewing machines are now sought-after vintage pieces, and memorabilia from past events.
The walls were decked with photos, some that were recent and showcased the incredible offering provided by the school, and many that captured its glorious past. There were framed photos of stalwarts like Dullah Omar, Siraj Desai, and Cissy Gool and former principals and teachers such as Ernie Steenveld, Hasan Bavasah, and Solly Edross, among many, many, too many others.
If the photos and memorabilia was designed to evoke emotions and memories as visitors entered the hall, it was the presentation by the students that followed which definitely pulled at the heartstrings. In addition to reminding the alumni, the performance of the school song sent a clear message to everyone in the hall about the values that underpin this wonderful institution. These values were confirmed as, one by one, students spoke about leading alumni and about the many challenges that the school had faced in the past. These challenges ranged from its establishment by Dr Abdurahman, how the first principal, Harold Cressy had to campaign for better facilities, how the school dealt with not only apartheid in general and its effect on education by producing many anti-apartheid activists and teachers, but specifically the effect that the declaration of District Six as a white area had on the institution.
The history of the school is intimately tied to the history of District Six and its inhabitants, and that message was clearly conveyed to the audience as the school commemorated 110 years of proud history
