Don't miss out -- be part of the 110th school birthday

Four weeks to go to the big celebration to mark Trafalgar High’s 110th anniversary since its establishment.

Do YOU have your place reserved to join the birthday bash at the school on December 3?

According to principal Salwa Southgate, planning and preparation for the function – a gala dinner – has been well underway for a while.  The school has an 18-member committee made up of staff members preparing for the Saturday event.

“We are working tirelessly, doing our very best to plan strategically in order to save costs while also ensuring that the event is thoroughly enjoyable for everyone in attendance,” Mrs Southgate said.

“We are catering for 220 guests, all of whom can comfortably be seated in our school hall. We have also secured a Moroccan stretch tent which will be located adjacent to the hall.

“In terms of catering, we will be procuring the services of the same company who assisted us during the centenary celebrations. They are well established and provide excellent service.”

There has been a great deal of excitement from past students since the challenge went out for ex-Trafalgarians to treat the occasion as something of a reunion.

“Tables have been reserved for the classes of 1970,1980,1990 and 1991 respectively,” Mrs Southgate said.

The Trafalgar Alumni Association, formed last year to further the interests of the school, has been promoting the event to its members who in turn, have been asked to pass it on to their schooldays contemporaries to promote the reunion angle.

It is expected that a number of former Trafalgarians who have excelled in various fields such as community service, the legal profession, medicine and sport will be in attendance. The school also plans on the day o display whichever class photos are available.

Further details of the presentations on the day will be announced soon as the school fine-tunes the organising for the day.

Happy Birthday

22 January 2022

As the  learners settle in  at the desks  this week at our  alma mater, let’s take a moment  to wish the old school a  happy birthday.

It was on January 22  way back in 1912 — two weeks after the founding of the ANC —  that  the institution first opened its doors to enable students of colour to further their education at secondary level.   That makes  Trafalgar High 110 years old today.

We were the first school and only school to do so for a good many years to give higher education opportunities to students of colour from the Cape Peninsula and surrounds as well as  from the other provinces and Namibia.

Principal Southgate

New Era

Trafalgar has a new principal and, for the first time in its 106-year history, the permanent head of our august institution is a female. The honour goes to Salwa Southgate who has the blood of Trafalgar coursing through her veins.

Her appointment was made public at the beginning of October but it came as no surprise to those in the know. She has been the acting head of the school since the beginning of the year.

Ms Southgate was also the deputy principal at Trafs for 5 years.

She is only the 12th principal or acting head to lead the school since Harold Cressy became its first in 1912. Since then there have been superb educators such as PM Heneke, Ernie Steenveld, Jack Meltzer, Ismoenie Taliep and Ghoosain Emeran.

There is no doubting that Trafalgar is in her blood, in her heart, in her mind. In an interview with her, it is apparent from the get-go that she lives Trafalgar; she breathes Trafalgar.

110 years  of unfoldment and moreto come…..
